Where to stay todayIf you want to find a room you can afford, you might need to widen your search. Here's how.![]() If you've ever been shocked by the price of a hotel room, join the club. You may have barely heard of Duluth, Minnesota, but rooms there will cost you at least $200 on summer and fall weekends, $350 if you wait until the last minute. Don't forget to add nearly 14 percent in taxes. Hotel rooms cost about the same in Chicago, except tax is 16.4 percent. And in both towns, you'll pay closer to $500 for big events. These days, you have to be creative if you don't want to spent your entire vacation budget on one measly weekend away. That's why such hotel alternatives as Airbnb and VRBO have become so popular. Here's a guide to finding a room — ideally, one you can afford. Best bets for the weekendEnjoy the last shreds of summer and first signs of fall.![]() It feels as if we have one foot in summer and one foot in fall. If you want to cool off, you'll find beer festivals in Racine, Egg Harbor and Green Bay. East of Grand Traverse Bay, go on a kayaking tour through a chain of lakes. For more frontier fun, go the prairie town of Madelia for a re-creation of the Younger Brothers Capture, the next chapter of the Jesse James Gang's ill-fated raid on Northfield. In nearby Mankato, go to the Mahkato Wacipi, one of the region's most powerful powwows. There's a lot going on in Milwaukee. Tour more than 150 historic buildings for free during Doors Open Milwaukee and watch collegiate rowers race in the Milwaukee River Challenge. Just to the north, go to Oktoberfest in Heidelberg Park, easily reached by the Oak Leaf Trail, and Wine & Harvest Festival in Cedarburg, on the Interurban Trail. Paddling, biking, driving — what's left? Motorcycling. The hogs will be out in force on both sides of Lake Pepin for the Fall Flood Run and in Wisconsin's north woods for the Tomahawk Fall Ride. Next weekendCelebrate the end of the Civil War, 150 years ago.![]() Civil War Weekend in Greenbush, Wis. Watch the Battle of Appomattox reenacted at this vivid event at the Wade House near Sheboygan. There's also a traveling medicine show, court martials, a sutler's row, period concerts and appearances by Abraham Lincoln. Sept. 26-27. Beef-A-Rama in Minocqua, Wis. In this lake town, there's a Rump Roast Run, Cow Pie Plop, beef-eating contest and Parade of Beef on Saturday. Sept. 25-26. Oktoberfest in Des Moines, Iowa. Take polka-dancing lessons, enter the Bier Maiden or stein-holding contests and win costume prizes at this fest downtown. Sept. 25-26. Cranberry Festival in Warrens, Wis. At this huge festival, there'll be marsh tours, contests and more than 1,300 booths selling antiques, produce and arts and crafts. The big parade is at noon Sunday. Sept. 25-27.
