November girlfriend getaways

In the slow season, women head out to have fun with their friends.

Shoppers in Galena.

In November, women make a break for it.

As men sit in deer stands or watch football games on TV, women hit the road with their friends. They shop, visit spas, sip wine, take cooking classes and see musicals their husbands or boyfriends don't want to see.

For women, November is a great month. Not only do they have a good excuse to get away with their friends, but they can get a head start on shopping for Christmas.

Below are some of the best events going on around the region this November.

Best bets for the weekend

Take a last fall-color hike, evade zombies and snap up a deal.

Walking around Lake Harriet in fall.

Bogeymen will be busy this weekend, especially in Wisconsin: haunting a submarine in Manitowoc, a cave in Blue Mounds and House of the Rock in Spring Green, which is creepy already.

Zombies will stagger from Right Brain Brewery in Traverse City and run around Washburn, Wis. You'll see less-gruesome characters at Halloween parades in Galena and Sycamore in Illinois, Fish Creek and Belleville in Wisconsin and Anoka and St. Paul in Minnesota.

The biggest Halloween bash is in Madison, where Freakfest will turn State Street into a seething mass of dancing humanity after the UW-Nebraska game turns the whole town red.

All Hallows' Eve parallels Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. You can help turn a soccer field into a cemetery in Chicago, go to a parade in Milwaukee and celebrate with art, dance and music in Minneapolis.

Fall peak may be past, but don't tell that to the trees, which still are glowing in colorful pockets. Follow water for a great late-fall hike: the Mississippi and Chain of Lakes in Minneapolis, the Geneva Lake Shore Path or one of two Seven Bridges trails, to Lake Michigan in South Milwaukee and along the Black River to the Mississippi near Trempealeau.

In Wisconsin and Minnesota state parks, hike by candlelight or jack-o-lantern, go  on a ghost walk or visit a haunted tower.

Bicyclists can take advantage of thinning crowds in popular fall trail destinations, including Lanesboro on the Root River in southeast Minnesota and Fox River towns west of Chicago.

If you like deals, this is a great time for a getaway. For $100 or less, stay at the Graduate in Madison or Grand Hotel in Minneapolis (Travelzoo), Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells or Harbor Shores in Lake Geneva (Groupon) and Candlelight Inn in Red Wing or Westby House in Viroqua (Living Social).

Next weekend

Creative thinkers converge at college-town arts festivals.

Roadside art in eastern Iowa.

Witching Hour Festival in Iowa City, Iowa. More than 70 musicians, artists, comedians, writers, thinkers, scientists and magicians perform and talk about creativity. Russian activists Pussy Riot will speak, and musicians include Wu Fei and the Duluth band Low. Nov. 4-5.

Art Attack in Minneapolis. In the northeast arts district, 250 visual artists team with musicians and writers for the free festival, this year with a "Peace and Love'' theme. Nov. 4-6.

Veterans Day Parade in Milwaukee. The 11 a.m. parade starts near Pere Marquette Park and follows Wells Street to Veterans Park on the lakefront. Nov. 5.

Wisconsin Dog Fair in Madison. Attend demonstrations and seminars on more than 150 breeds at Alliant Energy Center. Nov. 6.
