Going on a day trip

Short of time and cash? You don't need much for these lovely little vacations.

Cruise boats on the Fox River.

The summer is winding to a close, and you've used up all your vacation — and money, too.

What to do? Go on a day trip, of course.

It's amazing how many fun things you can fit into one day, once you get out of the city: Visit wineries, take paddlewheeler cruises, ride bicycle trails, tour lighthouses, find interesting shops.

Best bets for the weekend

Cheer for the Pack, try poutine, race a potato.

Statue of Paul Hornung at Packers Heritage Plaza.

The Minnesota State Fair opens today, featuring a great slate of free music, a daily parade and fun new dishes that belie the state's reputation as hotdish haven: kimchi 'n' curry poutine, tikka-on-a-stikka and sriracha balls, sliders and dogs.

If poutine sounds too exotic (actually, it's mostly french fries) head for northwest Minnesota and Barnesville's Potato Days, famous for mashed-potato wrestling, potato-car races and other spud fun, including a french-fry feed.

It'll be an exciting weekend in Green Bay. The Packers Hall of Fame just reopened after nearly two years of renovation, and the Packers play the Eagles at Lambeau Field. Downtown, 200 artists will gather for Artstreet, accompanied by non-stop live music.

This is a good time of year to go anywhere. Most lake resorts offer deals, and many throw in Labor Day weekend if people book the previous week.

Still — we hate to say it — it's time to plan for fall, when everyone wants to hit the road to see the colors. It comes and goes faster than you'd think — most Oktoberfests and grape stomps are in September.

Naturalists already are counting nighthawks on Duluth's Hawk Ridge, which draws birders from around the nation during migration.

Other places sure to be packed to the gills: Minnesota's North Shore, Door County, the Mississippi River Valley.

If you can't decide where to go, see which area has the most festivals in our guide to fall power-tripping. It's only seven short weekends … and you know what comes after that.

Next weekend

Chuck a chip, cross a bridge and savor some samples.

The Mackinac Bridge.

Wisconsin State Cow Chip Throw in Prairie du Sac, Wis. There are chip-chucking contests plus music, kids' games and an arts and crafts fair. The Tournament of Chips parade is at noon Saturday. Sept. 4-5.

Taste of Madison in Madison, Wis. This free festival on Capitol Square includes 200 menu items from more than 80 restaurants, all priced at $1-$4. There's also music on three stages. Sept. 5-6.

Fox Valley Folk Music & Storytelling Festival in Geneva, Ill. Musicians and storytellers perform on eight stages at this festival in Island Park on the Fox River. Sept. 6-7.

Mackinac Bridge Walk in Mackinaw City, Mich. Once a year, on Labor Day, people can walk across the five-mile span, the third-longest suspension bridge in the world. Sept. 7.
