Free time in state parks

On the first two weekends of June, check out a new park, trail or fishing hole at no cost.

Beginning of the Mississippi.

If you don't spend at least part of the next two weekends outdoors, you'll be missing the boat.

Especially in Wisconsin, where June 4-5 is Free Fishing Weekend, and Michigan, where it's June 11-12. In Minnesota, June 10-12 is Take a Kid Fishing Weekend.

This weekend, Wisconsin state parks celebrate National Trails Day by offering free admission — especially nice for non-residents, who now pay $11 for a daily pass. Next Saturday is National Get Outdoors Day, when admission to all Minnesota state parks is free.

Here's what's free and discounted in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan the next two weekends.

Best bets for the weekend

Milk! Cheese! Ice cream! It's summer in Dairyland.

Cheese carving in Wisconsin.

This is one of our favorite weekends for a road trip, when summer is fresh and new and other people are stuck at graduation parties.

Where to go? Wisconsin is a good bet. There are garden tours in Bayfield, and artists in the bluffs along Lake Pepin and around Mount Horeb are opening their doors for studio tours.

A dozen farms offer Dairy Breakfasts — often with ice cream — plus wagon rides, music and petting zoos. They continue through June.

On Capitol Square in Madison, pet calves and eat grilled-cheese sandwiches at Cows on the Concourse. In Little Chute, eat the most cheese curds and win a prize at the Great Wisconsin Cheese Festival.

Just over the Illinois border, enter a milk-drinking contest and play cow-chip lotto at Milk Days in Harvard. From nearby Union, ride the Udder Century Invitational.

There are two Rhubarb Festivals, in fun-loving Lanesboro, Minn., and Aledo, Rhubarb Capital of Illinois, south of the Quad Cities.

For more than pie, go to Milwaukee, where 45 restaurants offer deals during Downtown Dining Week. In Lake Geneva, it's Restaurant Week.

Just over the border in Michigan, get a free chairlift and elevator ride up Copper Peak, the giant ski-flying jump near Ironwood.

The Italians are out for Festa Italia in the Madison suburb of Fitchburg and the Scots for the Milwaukee Highland Games. Are you Swedish or Swiss? Check our list of summer heritage festivals; we're pretty sure there will be one for you.

The recent rains have been great for paddling … and also for mosquitoes. Just in time, Consumer Reports has told us which mosquito repellents work best. Spoiler: It's not the natural ones.

Next weekend

See lighthouses on an inland sea and skiing on a river.

Big Red lighthouse in Sturgeon Bay.

Lighthouse Festival in Door County, Wis. The Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay offers tours of the peninsula's 10 lighthouses by foot, boat, trolley and minibus. June 10-12.

Pride of the Fox Riverfest in St. Charles, Ill. See dragon-boat racing, a water-ski show, sand sculpting and car shows, all along the Fox River. June 9-12.

Summer Frolic in Mount Horeb, Wis. Just west of Madison, this town celebrates with a bean-bag toss, dog show, Saturday fireworks, Sunday parade and the Midwest qualifier for the national Stihl lumberjack competition. June 9-12.

Irish Festival in Oshkosh, Wis. This festival in Riverside Park on the Fox River includes Irish music, food and dancing. June 11-12.

A perfect summer in Rice Lake, Wisconsin

Aquafest in Rice Lake.

In summer, the Rice Lake area near Hayward is a classic vacation destination: There's a lot to do on the water, but also a lot to do in town.

On the lakes, go swimming, paddling or fishing. There's free fishing this weekend, so check the fishing report and go.

In town, there's racing at Rice Lake Speedway and lighthearted plays and musicals at Red Barn Theatre and Northern Star Theatre.

Outside town, go mountain-biking on 27 miles of trails, hiking on one of the longest sections of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail or golfing at one of many courses, including the 1920s Tagalong.

The summer calendar is packed. AquaFest starts Friday with a carnival and family fun, and the Barron County Dairy Breakfast is Saturday.

Next weekend is the Northwoods Bluegrass Festival and the Aquafest art fair, parade and a show by the Hydroflites water-ski team, which also performs Thursday and Sunday evenings on Lake Chetek.

Pick one of many resorts or motels and head for Rice Lake. You'll love its friendly nature!
