Nights at the museumSleep with the fishes or wolves and dinosaurs at family slumber parties.![]() Sleep with sharks. Howl with wolves. Get chummy with a mummy ... in the dark. At top museums, that results in sweet dreams, not nightmares. After everyone else goes home, many museums, aquariums, nature centers and even a submarine turn over their galleries to children and their adults. Armed with flashlights, they get to explore the exhibits, do experiments, have a snack, listen to a bedtime story and then get into their sleeping bags, right next to their favorite creature or historical character. It's a memorable — and inexpensive — getaway. Best bets for the weekendCure cabin fever with chocolate, candlelight and crazy games.![]() We hope you've been burning a lot of calories shoveling snow, because now it's time to binge. In Polish neighborhoods, people are gorging on the fried, fruit-filled pastries called paczki up to Fat Tuesday, also known as Paczki Day. There's a bacon bash in Rochester and two more coming up in Milwaukee and Des Moines. It'll be beer day in New Ulm for German Mardi Gras, and in St. Paul for the Beer Dabbler Winter Carnival. Next to Green Bay in De Pere, there's a chocolate walk, the first of many restorative chocolate events. To cast off cabin fever, go to an outdoor festival: the wackier, the better. At the Art Shanties on White Bear Lake, north of St. Paul, help pedal a giant Polar Bear Puppet or let artists pull you into a scavenger hunt, flamenco dancing or tarot readings. In Hudson, Fish Creek and Minneapolis, try the team ski known as smoosh boarding. Watch ice carvers in Lake Mills and Iola in Wisconsin and South Haven and St. Joseph in Michigan, and see the nation's best snow sculptors at work in Lake Geneva. Ski jumpers will be flying down the Olympic-size hill in Westby and sled dogs racing in Bayfield. In Minneapolis, the magical Luminary Loppet is almost full, but there are 22 other candlelight skis around the region. Get out now while the snow is fluffy and abundant! Next weekendEmbrace the ice with spikes or swimsuits.![]() Michigan Ice Fest in Munising, Mich. Watch ice-climbing demos and take clinics for beginners at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Lake Superior. Feb. 10-14. Polar Fest in Detroit Lakes, Minn. Compete in a fishing derby, join a polar plunge and watch fireworks. Feb. 12-14. Madison Winter Festival in Madison. See Capitol Square turn into a sports venue, with cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing plus music, family games and ice and snow sculptures. Feb. 13-14. Barstool Races in Drummond, Wis. In this small town north of Cable, watch people careen down a hill on decorated bar stools, then stay for the chili feed. Feb. 13. For more events, see our Events Calendar.
